Hatuey Chooses Hell

Hatuey was a Caribbean Taino cacique (chief) in the 16th century. He fought the Spanish before eventually being captured. As he was being burned at the stake, a priest asked him if he may accept Jesus and go to Heaven, or to go to Hell as a pagan. Here's his response as recorded by Spanish historian Las Casas:

"The chief then said without further thought that he did not want to go there but to hell so as not to be where they were and where he would not see such cruel people."
